The City of Stirling offers a variety of volunteering opportunities across our service areas. For over 35 years, volunteers have been an integral part of our organisation, bringing unique skills, experiences, and passion.
We have adopted the National Standards for Volunteer Involvement, as outlined by Volunteering Australia, to ensure best practices.

Board games at Inglewood Community Hub
Prepares and leads inclusive board game sessions that promote social connection at Inglewood Community Hub.
Crafternoons
Facilitate a friendly and inclusive crafting group by welcoming participants, setting up the space, and supporting a relaxed social atmosphere. Help ensure a smooth session by assisting with room access, and pack-down.
Community Kitchen
Assists in preparing, serving, and cleaning up meals in a welcoming environment that fosters social connection in Mirrabooka.
Day clubs
Support staff in delivering engaging day programs for seniors by assisting with transport, activities, and client interaction. Maintain safety, confidentiality, and uphold the dignity and independence of all participants.
Dungeons and Dragons master
Facilitates a monthly Dungeons and Dragons group at the Library by planning sessions and creating an inclusive and imaginative space for participants.
Event volunteers
Assist with the setup, event activities, and pack-down of City of Stirling events to ensure they run smoothly and successfully. Work collaboratively with staff and other volunteers to create a positive experience for attendees.
Mahjong group
Facilitates Mahjong sessions, offering guidance and creating a friendly, inclusive learning environment.
Movie/social Osborne Hub
Help create a warm and welcoming space for a free movie afternoon by setting up the room, preparing tea and coffee, and operating the DVD player. Engage with attendees to foster a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and support a positive social experience.
Walking group at Inglewood Community Hub
Connects with participants and fosters community through friendly, inclusive walking sessions.
Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme
Provide companionship to aged care residents through regular visits, offering social connection and emotional support. Maintain communication with coordinators and follow all safety, recordkeeping, and volunteer protocols.
Be Connected - Digital mentors
Delivers one-on-one digital literacy support to seniors in the community and build capacity and confidence in using essential technology.
Conversational English
Leads English conversation groups to help participants build language skills and confidence in a casual setting.
Creative Writing
Supports library staff in planning inclusive Writing Group sessions that foster creativity, confidence, and writing skill development among diverse patrons.
Job Shop
Provides guidance, skill-building, and job search assistance while maintaining confidentiality.
Men's Shed volunteers
Support members in safely gaining machine competency through structured guidance, checklist-based instruction, and adherence to safety protocols.
Naala Djookan volunteer
Supports women affected by family and domestic violence through compassionate engagement in creative and cultural activities that foster healing and connection.
Code Club Mentor
Assists with coding workshops for youth aged 7–17, fostering digital skills in a fun, collaborative setting.
Chinese Rhyme Time
Co-facilitates interactive Chinese-language story and song sessions for young children and families.
Stirling L.E.A.D.S
Supports youth leadership initiatives through planning, promotion, and event delivery.
Library Info Hub
Assists library visitors with local service information, documentation, and resource navigation at the library.
Mount Flora Regional Museum
Support the Museum Curator in operating the Mount Flora Regional Museum by following daily procedures and assisting at the reception desk during open hours.
Women's Centre
Organises public donations by sorting, tagging, and storing items, maintaining a clean storeroom, and upholding confidentiality of the centre and its residents.

The City of Stirling proudly supports a wide range of community groups that are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with a variety of roles. These groups operate independently within the City and offer opportunities in areas such as arts and culture, environment, youth, seniors, sport and recreation, and social support.

We have a number of Conservation Volunteering groups in the City of Stirling. These groups help conserve local bush, wetland and coastal areas.

We support a number of community gardens across the City of Stirling, each managed by dedicated local volunteers. These gardens vary in style and purpose, some focus on growing fresh produce like vegetables and fruit, while others showcase native bush plants, including bush tucker species, creating welcoming green spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Community gardens may be located on City-managed land or private property, and many host events and workshops for both garden members and the wider community. If you’re interested in joining a community garden, please contact one of the groups listed below.
Autumn, Pensioner, Retirees, and Senior Citizens’ Clubs operate from many of the City’s community centres, offering a welcoming space for older adults to connect through social, educational, and recreational activities. Please note: membership and activity fees may apply.
These clubs are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to:
- Join their executive committees
- Help raise community awareness
- Support with events and activities.

FAQs
Anyone aged 18 and over (or 16 years of age and above for certain roles) who is passionate about giving back to the community is welcome to apply.
Volunteers gain new skills, meet great people, contribute to community well-being, and are recognised for their valuable service.
Volunteering opportunities span across areas, e.g. delivering books or meals, social visiting, craft, walking groups, assisting in events or supporting seniors with technology, etc.
Most roles don’t require formal experience. However, some may require specific skills, a regular commitment or screening checks.
Yes! All new volunteers complete an induction program. You’ll also receive an orientation and, in most cases, be paired with a buddy on your first shift. Role-specific training is provided to ensure you feel confident and supported.
Most shifts are between two and four hours on weekdays. Commitment varies by role some are weekly, fortnightly or monthly. A small number of casual opportunities are also advertised throughout the year.
Yes. All City of Stirling volunteers must complete a Volunteer National Police Certificate, which is paid for by the City.
If your role involves working with children, you’ll also need a Working with Children Check, which the City will reimburse.
No. We welcome volunteers from other local government areas. However, around 60% of our volunteers are local residents, as many enjoy contributing to their own community and find it easier and more affordable to travel to their volunteering location.
We celebrate our volunteers in a variety of ways, including:
- Annual volunteer appreciation events
- Volunteer of the Month
- Thank you hampers or gifts
- Shout-outs in newsletters or social media
- Nomination for local or national volunteer awards.
While volunteering is not a direct pathway to employment, many volunteers develop transferable skills, build networks, and gain experience that can enhance their job prospects.
Please note that work placements and student placements are not part of the City’s volunteer program, as they require additional supervision and formal learning outcomes. More information on work experience at the City of Stirling can be found on our website.
